Special Guest Teacher

Mrs. Wakefield came to our class today. She showed us techniques to use when introducing a non-fiction book. This will help us and we can also use the technique with our 1st grade
 partners.
We took a guess about what some vocabulary words might mean in relationship to a story about peanuts. After our predictions, we checked it out! It was fun to see if we were right or wrong!  It made us laugh.  Sometimes, we picked the right way but sometimes we weren't give close!

Museum On the Move

Museum on the Move came to our school today to help the 4th Graders have fun with and learn about Fossils!

Utah Museum of Natural History from the University of Utah - Museum on the Move brings authentic experiences in natural history directly to the 4th grade classroom. The Museum facilitator sets the stage for students to work as teams of scientists on challenges that allow them to ask their own questions, make and record observations and inferences, and draw their own conclusions.
MoM uses highly engaging Museum specimens and practices inquiry-based instruction. MoM is made available to all public schools within the state of Utah at no charge. Funding is provided by the Utah State Legislature and by the Utah State Office of Education's Informal Science Education Enhancement (iSEE) fund.

They taught us about Fossils: Evidence of Utah's Past!
Thanks to all those who help provide this service to our classes!

Poetry Outloud Begins & Community essays

This is the week that our students are presenting the poems that they memorized in class.  We had 8 students present on Monday and will continue with the rest throughout the week!

We have been typing up our essays of "Why I Like My Community" this week, too.  We had some very good essays.  It will be difficult choosing the one to send in to the contest.  Good job 4th graders!  We do live in an awesome place, don't we?

Week 4 with Alvin

Here are our 4th week friends with Alvin.

We drew pictures of groundhogs this week and did a little research.  The results are found on our Project Groundhog page if you'd like to see them!

Week 3 with Alvin

Here comes Alvin home with these students for Week 3!

Friday, February 20, 2009

Half way

We are half way through our ground hog project. Here is the summary of the results so far:
Fahrenheit Celsius
Week 1 35.2 1.8
Week 2 31.5 -0.28
Week 3 34.04 1.13

What do you think? Did Alvin predict right about more winter storms or is this really spring on its way?  Can a groundhog really predict the weather?  Is he right or is he wrong?  Scientific or lucky?

Valentine's Activity

We are going to have a Valentine's Activity Friday!  We will be exchanging valentines at school.  The student may bring a treat to share with the class if desired.  No, it is NOT a requirement as some students told me they were going to tell you!  We are also having a  mini-READ-A-THON! The students may bring a blanket and/or pillow to make themselves comfortable with as we will have a block of time to spend enjoying reading!

We will still have our spelling test and some of our regular daily work so the whole day is not activity!  Remember that Sandwich Book Reports are due and that there is NO SCHOOL MONDAY!

Have a great weekend and Happy Valentine's Day!

Award Winning Book Report

Our next book report is due anytime before March 18th. This book is to be an Award winning book. If you read a few minutes every night, the book should be finished in plenty of time.
Students, you have three choices for the type of report this month. You get to choose the one project that you iare most interested in. 1. Book jacket Cover 2. Book Float and/or 3. Scrapbook page.

Book jacket cover
Design a new, original book jacket cover for the book. Paper for this is available in our classroom.
Front cover: Illustrate the book setting and some of the happenings of the book on the front cover. Do NOT copy the original book cover.
Inside front and back flap: Write a summary of the book including characters, conflicts, complications, and resolution. This should take up most of both flaps.
You may add information about the author on the back inside flap if you have space.
Back Cover: Create “quotes” from book critics to praise the book. We can poll other students at our school for this. You can ask teachers of the school if they have read the book, etc.

Book Float
The students may design and decorate an upside down shoe box to correspond with the Award winning book they read. The students need to visualize this as a “float” in a parade.
1. The title should be written in correct form with the proper words capitalized and the whole title underlined. The author’s name should be written after the title.
2. The Newbery medal or other award medal can be placed on the front of the ”float.”
3. A neat and brief summary of the book should be on the other side of the “float.”
4. The student’s name should be on the back of the “float.”
5. Decorations should be used to build the scene on the shoe box. The scene needs to clearly indicate something specific about the book.

Scrapbook page
Directions are available.

Poetry Outloud

Students should have their poem picked and approved. They should be underway at memorizing the poem. These poems are to be memorized and practiced at home. The students should work on 'how" they are going to present their home. They each need to work on putting their personality into the poem and good inflection.

All students need to be ready to go by the 23rd. Students should present their poem to their family for practice before the 23rd. These poems will be presented in our classroom sometime during the week of February 23rd – 26th. The students will be randomly chosen to present sometime that week.

Select students from our classroom, as well as others, may be chosen to perform at an assembly on March 2nd and then possibly again at a community fundraising activity. If your child is chosen, you will be notified.

Did he see his shadow?

Here are some pictures of some of us outside this morning checking for shadows.  What do you think our conclusion is?

Yes, Alvin saw his shadow just like all of us did!  That means we will probably have more winter storms before spring can come.  No getting rid of our coats yet!
